The Redefinition of Family

I saw this image on Twitter. Of coursed it irk'd me.

The redefinition of family doesn't connect to any of the other anthropological terms we use, it just hangs there completely irrelevant in the necessity to be everything to everyone one, making it rather meaningless in it's function.

But it is interesting about the 'good times and bad', because most people bail when things goes bad. Spouses leave and adult children do not stay connected to parents. On both elements it's a foolish thought.

I did looked up it's actually term and Oregon State pretty much refuses to give it a definition.

"family - families are universal in cultures, but their definition and dynamics are changing. A very inclusive definition is two or more people who define themselves as a family. Also see "extended family," "nuclear family"

That could be anything...

Otherwise the definitions of family are still the same. For instance

"bilineal - descent in which the individual figures kinship through both the father's and mother's descent group."

genealogy - a family tree or web of kinship relationships traced through parents and children. Also called a kindred

kinship chart - the diagram of kinship relations using symbols to indicate males, females, marriages, divorces, siblings, descent, and deceased relatives. Also called a kindred diagram.

What Fox's Empire gets right about gay parenting

Yeah, I'm one of the millions enjoying Fox's Empire. The ratings are through the roof. In my previous post on the show, I was very happy how they portrayed the gay character, Jamal is no magical elf (not my term). Despite the larger then life personalities, all of the actors on the show have done a wonderful job making the characters humans and not stereotypes.

Jamal's a dad. The child is from a previous relationship, apparently as a sham marriage, but to make the best of the situation Jamal had sex with his wife.

Jamal's a dad, and his orientation is absolutely irrelevant. Jamal's a dad, and from the previews it is hoped that Jamal will be an engaging loving father.

Flip 180 degrees....

a married lesbian couple in New Jersey. They’ve had their parenting expectations upended—twice—by the sperm donors of their two kids. Both men agreed, in writing, to provide their raw materials and to leave the parenting to the women. But then they decided that, after all, they’d like to have some role in the lives of their biological children, so they applied for visitation rights. As of now, the bio dads are winning

What if the sperm donor was gay?

Would that matter, because the lesbian parents would be denying the child a gay parent. Right?

7QT Explaining STDs to a 13 year old

More 7QT takes at "This Ain't the Lyceum"

1. This is a third installment of this series.

Explaining STDs to an 11 year old girl

Explaining STDs to a 12 year old girl

This will be the last installment, because my daughter will be 13 soon, and she will be a teenager. Don't worry I have three younger sons.

2.  This books helps! My daughter has read it about three times already.

3. So I've decided on my daughter's behalf that she will receive the HPV vaccine. I spoke to her pediatrician, in the previous two years. If your child really knows where babies come from, you can talk about STDs as well.  We weighed the issues, yes it is early. And yes, I have reservations how the pharmaceuticals marketed this vaccine.  But because there are follow up boosters involved you have to consider the ability to drag a 13 year old into the pediatrician's office. Take that into consideration. Your teenager's life may be too busy with activities to go back twice, and it can be easily forgotten.

4. There was a NOVA episode on vaccines, back in September it covered all differing types of vaccines. There is no partisan hype in this episode. While HPV is just a another disease, transmissions is different. HPV isn't airborne like measles. STDs are behavior based, measles is NOT. It's not being preachy to acknowledge this. It's information, that's important in our decisions as adults.

5. This also lead to a conversation about pap-smears. Someone's little ten year old brother was listening in. He knows where babies come from, and I informed him that boys get STDs too.  This wasn't a fear based conversation. It was in plain medical terms. When individuals are sexually active, this is what they will expect from their doctor. In the future I will explain to him, they have to swab the inside of one's penis to check for STDs  Chasity does have it's benefits. Personally and for the public's health.

6 If you don't use NFP and use contraception or may had your tubes tied/vasectomy in the past, learn it for the benefit of your children. I live in a city that openingly advertises hormonal implants for girls at the pediatricians office. Not sure if is because we live in a low-income neighborhood, where our rates of teen pregnancy (including 18-19 years) is higher then the suburbs. I had to explain this as well to my daughter, and that it's important to really let your cycle establish itself and for your to know your natural periods. Periods are normal and healthy. Again this is knowledge. This is knowledge I wish I knew at 12.

7. And this is the real reason why I do not want my daughter on social media.
"Breaking (up) Bad: Risks of remaining friends" via New York Post
"Only 19 percent of adults would unfollow their ex on social media.” It’s pretty hard to have a clean break if you’re consistently following your ex’s every tweet and Instagram photo.

You need a clean break from an ex. End of story. You need to be able to move on. End of story. You can't completely avoid exes, so why carry the extra baggage online! You don't need to 'friend' or follow anyone. If they are your friend they will give you their phone number.

You do NOT have to stay friends. You just don't have to be a jerk to an ex.

President Obama lying about lying

I really do not want this to be an anti-Obama post, but Mr. President I'm calling you on this. My children read books about President Washington, who couldn't tell a lie and President 'Honest Abe' Lincoln. With the exemption of issues around national security, no you can NOT lie.

"Axelrod writes that he knew Obama was in favor of same-sex marriages during the first presidential campaign, even Obama publicly said he only supported civil unions, not full marriages. Axelrod also admits to counseling Obama to conceal that position for political reasons.”
Professor Althouse takes down David Axelrod of his bullsh!t....

Back to President Obama

What a minute Mr. President said that he had evolved. Meaning that he didn't hold the position of same-sex marriage, but defended marriage based on a man and a woman for the public policy goal of a child being raised by both biological parents.

Let's go back a few years here, when he was Senator.,..

Back in 2007, President Obama sponsored a bill as Senator Obama cited as "Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Families Act of 2007"

In the first section of the bill highlights as its goal as "Healthy marriage promotion and responsible fatherhood program"

Let's look at the first seven findings of the written proposed bill...

""Congress makes the following findings:(1) The most important factor in a child’s upbringing is whether the child is brought up in a loving, healthy, supportive environment.
 (2) Children who grow up with two parents are, on average, more likely than their peers in single-parent homes to finish high school and be economically self-sufficient.
 (3) Father-child interaction, like mother-child interaction, has been shown to promote the positive physical, social, emotional, and mental development of children.
 (4) Children typically live without both parents when their parents are divorced or did not marry. More than 1/3 of all first marriages end in divorce, and 60 percent of divorcing couples have children. More than 1/3 of all births are to unmarried women.
 (5) More than 1 in 4 families with children have only 1 parent present, and more than 1 in 3 children live absent their biological father.
 (6) Recent studies demonstrate that most unwed fathers in urban areas are highly involved with the mother of their child before and after the child's birth, with 80 percent involved during the mother's pregnancy, and 50 percent living with the child’s mother at the time of the child's birth. However, the relationship between the parents often does not last, and many fathers do not maintain contact with their children as the children grow up.
 (7) An estimated 40 percent of the children who live in households without their father have not seen their fathers in at least 1 year."
Why lie now?

I don't get it. By his actions he was clearly not in favor of gay marriage at all. In fact he sponsored a bill very bluntly stating the purpose of marriage was child centered and not adult center. As we can read that the idea of marriage had nothing to do with hate or unjust discrimination against people who are gay.

Now his former political consultant is attempting to rewrite his record, stating that really his support of marriage and even this bill you co-sponsered was a complete farce to get the public to like Obama  at the time. Are you telling me that Obama  really does not care if fathers are fully engaged with their children and that the parental relationship between one's mother and father doesn't matter to the well being of the child?

He's the President of the United States of America and his closest consultants are informing us that he lied.... Why?

I'm going to assume in 2007 Obama was telling the truth, but when public policy didn't go the way Obama wished in the past few years... he had to 'evolve' to save face for the 1%, because I mean who cares about strengthening low-income families that sure don't fund the billion plus dollars for a presidential campaign.

There is no difference between the value and worth of heterosexual and homosexual persons. We all deserve equal protection and opportunity in academe, housing, employment, and medical care, because we are all humans created in the image of God.
However, when it comes to procreation and child-rearing, same-sex couples and opposite-sex couples are wholly unequal and should be treated differently for the sake of the children.
When two adults who cannot procreate want to raise children together, where do those babies come from? Each child is conceived by a mother and a father to whom that child has a natural right. When a child is placed in a same-sex-headed household, she will miss out on at least one critical parental relationship and a vital dual-gender influence. The nature of the adults’ union guarantees this. Whether by adoption, divorce, or third-party reproduction, the adults in this scenario satisfy their heart’s desires, while the child bears the most significant cost: missing out on one or more of her biological parents.

I want to cry. This! This!
